ACCORDING to scientists, snowsports in Scotland will almost certainly die out within the next 70 to 80 years because of global warming.
At the conference of the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions in Crieff last year, John Mayhew, a climatologist with the Met Office’s Hadley Centre for Climate Change, predicted that there will be between 90 and 100 per cent less snowfall in Scotland by the year 2080.
In 2004, Adam Watson, of the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Banchory, Aberdeenshire, made an even more drastic analysis, warning that the industry might have only 20 years left.
Scotland’s five ski areas, Cairngorm, Glenshee, Nevis Range, Glencoe and The Lecht, have experienced a substantial decrease in the number of skier visits since the late 1980s and early 1990s.
In Cairngorm and Glenshee, the largest resorts, the reduction has been dramatic. The two hills received 348,000 and 166,000 skier visits respectively in 1986, but by the 2005-6 season, those figures had plummeted to 55,200 and 42,460.
As well as decreasing snowfall, the slump is also partly due to the explosion in budget air travel, which suddenly made ski breaks to the Alps much more affordable.
From my experience, on a good day, Scotland *can* be as good as anywhere. However unless you are an enthusiast the key is to watch the weather forecasts and profit when conditions are good. Obviously this is a lot easier if you live locally. So I wouldn’t recommend booking a weeks holiday in advance.
But then that has never been what skiing north of the border is all about.
Given the choice of either going on holiday for 2 weeks to ski or being able to ski regularly throughout the season at least a couple of times a week (on average), I’d always choose the later if it had to be one or other.

Scotland has  five wintersports centres with skiing and snowboarding facilities for people of all ages and skill levels. The five centres are-
  1. Nevis Range
  2. Glencoe
  3. Glenshee
  4. Cairngorm
  5. The Lecht
Nevis Range is high up in the moutain of Aonach Mor which is Scotland’s eighth highest mountain, and skiing and snowboarding continue till late spring. A gondola takes visitors from the car park to the base of the skiing range. The gondola ride itself is an amazing experience with breathtaking views along the way. For experienced skiers, there are trails for cross-country skiing and the Nevis Range World Cup Downhill course. There is also a range for beginners with green and blue graded runs.
Glencoe mountain has a particular run called the Fly Paper which attracts daredevil skiers and experienced snowboarders. It is the steepest black-graded run in Britain. Glencoe has a total of nineteen runs, four of them being green-graded and six blue-graded.
Glenshee literally means ‘glen of the fairies’ and is the largest ski resort in the UK. Glenshee’s longest single run, Glas Maol, provides 2 km of skiing. Skiers also have a choice of 36 ski runs.
Cairngorm mountain is one of the most beautiful places to ski in UK and probably the most popular one in Scotland. It has Scotland’s only funicular train service. For skiing enthusiasts, there are a range of green, blue, red and black-graded runs, the longest run being 3.3 km long. There is the additional attraction of Ptarmigan Restaurant, the highest restaurant in UK at a height of 1,097m above sea level.
The Lecht is an ideal playground for all levels of skiers and snowboarders, specially for beginners, as there is a wide area for them close to the car park, and a magic carpet travelator. Conditions being favourable, snowtubing is also offered.
All five ski centres in Scotland have great conditions for skiing. The Lecht and Glenshee have snow making facilities as well, which means that these centres are open for a longer period of time. Each of these centres has equipment for hire and lessons for all ages and abilities.
